Buying your own plan in North Georgia

North Georgia has a lot of people who work for themselves: cabin-rental and tourism owners in the mountains, flooring installers and subcontractors around Dalton, and trades businesses along I-75 and I-985. Since the extra federal tax credits ended, a single person earning more than about $64,000 gets no federal help at all (source).

Prices for people who buy their own plan rose sharply too: across Georgia, the average monthly amount enrollees paid after any credit went from $74 in 2025 to $164 in 2026 (source).

Mountain roads: why a doctor by phone fits here

From Blue Ridge or Hiawassee, the nearest large hospital can be an hour or more away, and a routine office visit can take half a day. Most everyday problems (an infection, a rash, a refill, a question about a lab result) can be handled by phone or video instead.

The pairing we most often recommend includes a virtual primary care membership with same-day virtual appointments and access around the clock, with no copay per visit. It works the same in Ellijay as in Gainesville.

For an emergency, go to the nearest hospital. Health sharing has no network, so the bill is handled the same way wherever you go, including across the line in Tennessee or North Carolina.

Who it fits here, and who should stay on insurance

Usually a good fit: healthy individuals and families who buy their own plan, self-employed people, early retirees under 65, and households whose income is too high for much Marketplace help.

Usually better on insurance: anyone who qualifies for Georgia Medicaid or PeachCare for Kids, anyone with a serious ongoing condition who needs it paid for in year one, anyone planning a pregnancy in the next nine months, anyone who needs regular mental-health therapy, and anyone whose tax credit makes an ACA plan cheap.

In this region specifically: If anyone in the household works at a large plant, school system or hospital with a good plan, compare it first. Many mill and plant jobs come with benefits.

Questions we hear from this region

Can I use Northeast Georgia Medical Center or Hamilton Medical Center with health sharing?

Yes. There's no provider network, so any licensed hospital works. Pay as a self-pay patient up to your Initial Unshareable Amount, then submit eligible bills. Call the sharing program before planned care.

What if I need care in Chattanooga or western North Carolina?

That works too. Health sharing has no network and no state lines for care. Pay as a self-pay patient and submit eligible bills.

Is this health insurance?

No. Health care sharing and direct primary care are alternatives to insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed, and it isn't Minimum Essential Coverage. Georgia has no state penalty for going without insurance.

Health care sharing
Health care sharing ministries are not insurance and are not regulated as insurance. Sharing of medical expenses is voluntary and not guaranteed. Review each organization's guidelines for details, limitations, and state-specific notices.

Georgia notice (O.C.G.A. § 33-1-20)
Georgia law requires a health care sharing ministry to give this notice on or with its applications and guideline materials: “Notice: The organization facilitating the sharing of medical expenses is not an insurance company, and neither its guidelines nor plan of operation is an insurance policy. Whether anyone chooses to assist you with your medical bills will be totally voluntary because no other participant will be compelled by law to contribute toward your medical bills. As such, participation in the organization or a subscription to any of its documents should never be considered to be insurance. Regardless of whether you receive any payment for medical expenses or whether this organization continues to operate, you are always personally responsible for the payment of your own medical bills.” Health care sharing is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

Direct primary care
Direct primary care is a membership with a primary care practice. Under Georgia's Direct Primary Care Act (2019), a direct primary care agreement is not insurance and is not subject to the state's insurance laws; the agreement must say in writing that it is not health insurance. A DPC membership does not pay for specialists, hospital care or emergencies, and it is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

Discount plans
THIS PLAN IS NOT INSURANCE and is not intended to replace health insurance. A discount plan provides discounts at participating providers and does not make payments to providers; the member pays the discounted fee. Discount plan organization: Careington International Corporation, 7400 Gaylord Parkway, Frisco, TX 75034. Discount plans are not ACA Qualified Health Plans.
